Frequently Asked Questions

Can a gum lift restore my lost gum tissue?

A gum lift could help restore lost gum tissue, but it will not be able to completely regenerate it. The real purpose of a gum lift is to improve the aesthetics of your smile by correcting an uneven gum line and giving you a more symmetrical appearance. There are other procedures that are more suitable to regenerating lost gum tissue, such as a connective tissue graft. In cases where there is significant bone loss, a bone graft may be required to provide a foundation for the new gum tissue first.

How long does a gum lift take?

A gum lift is a relatively quick and simple procedure, taking around 30 to 60 minutes to complete. Your dentist will provide local anaesthesia to numb the treatment area, and they will then carefully trim away any excess gum tissue. Once your dentist is happy with the new gum line, they will stitch up the incisions and apply a dressing. They will give you instructions on how to care for your gum lift site as it heals. Healing typically takes around two weeks.

What are the risks associated with a gum lift?

As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks associated with a gum lift. These include bleeding, infection, swelling and pain. However, these risks are minimal when the procedure is carried out by a qualified and knowledgeable dentist, such as those at Dental Haus. As with any of our procedures, if you do happen to experience any complications after your gum lift, we will be more than happy to see you for a follow-up appointment.

Are gum lifts a common procedure?

Gum lifts are a relatively common procedure and can be carried out on their own or as part of a more comprehensive treatment plan. For example, if you are getting veneers, a gum lift may be required to improve their fit and create a level surface so that your dentist can apply the veneers evenly. Alternatively, you may choose a gum lift if you are unhappy with the appearance of your gums and want to improve the aesthetics of your smile. Gum lifts can also reduce gum irritation caused by braces.
